J. I. Packer was a wise and practical man. He has left us thoughtful advice on all kinds of helpful subjects—for example, what we should read: “Read two old books for every new one.”

He not only was practical, but deeply spiritual. In a book titled 18 Words: The Most Important Words You Will Ever Know, he wrote, “Whatever else in the Bible catches your eye, do not let it distract you from Him.” This is tremendous advice. The devil’s full-time job is to distract the saints from Christ. And I guess at times he may even use our misapprehension of the Bible to do it.

The devil’s full-time job is to distract the saints from Christ.

I was thinking about distractions this week as I drove down the road and found myself on the rumble strips. How thankful I am that the State puts those rumble strips on the side of the road to keep people like me from being “fatally” distracted. God puts “rumble strips” in our lives as well to save our souls!

Are you focused on Christ, or has something distracted you from him? What “rumble strips” is the Holy Spirit using to get you back on track? Are you listening?
